July 3 Newsletter

So here is our 4th of July quiz for you: which wine most embodies the spirit of the 4th of July? (Don't peek.)

Madeira. Madeira has the distinction of being the wine that the Founding Fathers used to toast the Declaration of Independance, Washington's Inaguration, the establishment of Washington, DC as the nations capital and other historic events.

Why you ask? The island of Madeira served as a well-known port for various shipping routes going to and from the New World. England had specific legislation know as The British Navigation Act in place that ultimately prevented the exportation of wine and other goods to the Colonies in the New World, unless it came on a British vessel and originated from a British port of call. However, the island of Madeira was exempt from this law of unfair taxation, so Madeira became a staple wine on the vessels bound for American colonies. Thus a wine free from English taxation and tyranny.

Want to be patriotic? Drink Madeira on the 4th.

Germany Part 2

mosel_pitch.jpg
Looking down on the Mosel River
As I look down on the Mosel River in Germany, I realized why winemaking can be so difficult. The slopes of the sides of the hills along the Mosel run, in some areas, at a slope of 60 degrees. At this slope, it is impossible for grapes to be picked mechanically, so the grapes must be picked by hand very carefully. One slip can send you tumbling a long way!

Yet this area produces the greatest Rieslings in all the world, becuase of the composition of soil and other enviornmental factors. But, due to the labor intesive nature of picking grapes in the area, costs are much higher, then in easier areas to pick that produce lesser quality grapes. Hence, the old saying is true: you get what you pay for.

Germany is one of the most beautiful wine producing areas of the world, yet one of the most under-appreciated. What a beautiful countryside, from the luscious wine estates, to the small wine houses.  Make plans to visit!

Germany Part 1
Monday, 08 September 2008

We have arrived in Germany, where we began by celebrating the 200th anniversary of our gracious host, Valckenberg. Valckenberg is the importer of the finest German wines, of which we carry several in the store. On Monday, we visited three wineries: Castell in Franconia (which is part of Bavaria), Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau and Johannishof Estate in Johannisberg. Johannishof is one of the wineries from which so many of our customers have bought the Kabinett Riesling and have fallen in love with it, as we have.

One of the things you notice is due to the cooler climate here in Germany, all of the hillsides that grapes are grown on are south facing, to catch as much of the sun as possible. This is beautiful wine country, dedicated to making the finest wines possible. Did you know that wines have been made here for 2000 years?

Other observations:

  • Ice Wine is getting more difficult to produce here with the changing climate, which wine makers have been affected by in the last five years.
  • Riesling is not the only grape grown here! Among the white wines we have tasted, Silvaner can be absolutely amazing, similar to Sauvignon Blanc. Among the reds, there are some great Pinot Noir coming from here, with bright acidity and great fruit.
We will be in touch soon!
